Talk to the Animals

No - I have not fallen off the face of the earth. Just busy busy busy.

We have some new news around here, but I won't share that until Monday when I am clearer about it. No - I don't have a job yet.

Today we had a big old animal blessing at church, which is quite common to do on the Feast Day of St. Francis. (that link goes to Padre Mickey who 'splains saints better than anyone I know.) St. Francis did preach to the birds - he loved the animals and all of creation. I personally love St. Francis a lot. He was a total whacko but of the very best kind - he rejected every convention of society, including his rich family and a big assload of money, just so that he could serve the sick, the poor and those at the farthest reaches of society, including the birds.

Anyway, the animal blessing was really great - it was a beautiful day for it. If you click this link you will come to a flickr slide show of all the people and animals.

Mr. BooBoo the Cat, pictured above with Stepdaughter She Is was the sole feline in attendance among about 30 dogs, 1 tortoise and 1 fish.

My stepdaughter was especially concerned that we pray for Rowan. Stepdaughter knows Rowan well from seeing the blog and from the great photo of Rowan on our fridge. We even got a certificate of blessing made up with Rowan's name to send to him and Lindy.

We also prayed for our dearly departed friend, St. Grendel of Gravy. It usually takes awhile plus some stuff by the pope for a saint to get made. And it usually doesn't happen the day after you head off to paradise, but that is exactly what has happened!

You see, Mad Priest came up with a papal-free workaround and St. Grendel of Gravy just is.

St. Grendel of Gravy - As it should be.

Grendel we will always miss you - we will always love you!

Back before the popes took over the job, local people made their own saints. And, isn't it better that way? I'd much rather my neighbors thought I was a saint than the pope.

Rowan prayed to Saint Grendel and Saint Laika this evening when he got medicine put on his sores. The people (and dogs) have spoken. Grendel is a saint!

So wonderful that you remembered Rowan at the blessing. I'll tell him as soon as he wakes up.

Rowan had a good day today. He went to the toy box ans walked around quite a lot. He's going to be fine.

It has been a comfort to me to know that he has so many friends who are willing to say a prayer for him. I do love this dog, you know.

Thanks Fran.

It must be great to have a blessing of the animals. I have read about it in England but have never actually heard of it being celebrated here in Australia. Glad Rowan is improving and of course always thinking of St Grendel.

What are you feeding stepdaughter? She looks as if she's grown a foot and a half since we last saw her.

St Francis sounds like the kind of saint I could dig.

My sister-in-law will bring the family pooch for a blessing every now and again. You know I'm not a believer, but I approve. St. Francis of Assisi was one saint I could understand.

I love the idea and Grendel's new distinction, it sounds well deserved.

You know this may be strange but part of the reason I started to have questions about the church and faith was because of a discussion with a priest. I was young and lost a dog and was talking to a priest about it and he said he was sorry but dogs don't make it into heaven.

I thought "well that doesn't sound so great. What's the point of heaven if the people and animals you loved while alive aren't there?"
