Recently I have encountered a blog called Finding My Way Home, by Chani. I urge you to stop by and visit her.
The blog is of someone who is a seeker, politically and socially aware and it is very visually gorgeous as well. Very gorgeous.
Today she posted about convention, which (I respectfully disagree a bit!) Chani thought has been lackluster so far.
Then I found the meat of the post where Chani links to the text of Mario Cuomo's amazing 1984 convention speech.
That prompted me to link to her and to post the video.
Watch. Weep. Hope. Work like hell - we are going to have to. Bushworld makes Reaganland look like a cakewalk.
Mario Cuomo is one of my heroes. I adore the man- always have, always will. My husband had frequent interaction with him when Cuomo was governor. My husband is not dazzled by power, he rather loathes what it does to people. Don't even get him started on Elliot Spitzer... He loves Mario Cuomo. (He is very fond of David Patterson too! No he does not work in politics, but close to it.)
I remember the hope I felt when I watched that 24 years ago. 24 years ago! What has happened to our land? Let us undo that!

Thanks for linking this, Fran. :) I hope all your visitors will listen to this speech! It is political rhetoric at its best. In 1984, this one had me clapping in my living room - or crying on the couch. It's very, very evocative!

So it's 24 years later and we're still begging. What's wrong with us?!? The rich get richer and the poor get poorer is not a good national policy. What the rich forget is to look down and see all the backs they are standing on.
I'm hoping that maybe the convention is building to a big crescendo on Thursday night and that's when we'll get the great oratory.
Wow, that is a great blog. Thanks for pointing it out. I will have to blogroll it so I can go visiting over there again.
How far we haven't come. But then, there's always hope! We've got to have that or we may as well accept defeat.
Cuomo hit the social darwinism on the head, didn't he? it's still that way.
I like chani too, Fran, and I'm also a Cuomo fan. As I told her, I also remember a great essay Cuomo wrote about the proper role of faith in politics. I think Obama was influenced by this article. I'm going to have to find it again.
Love the guy. My friend Lizzo and I once drove to Worcester (from Boston) just to hear him speak.
This was truly one of the great American speeches.
I will NEVER forgive (okay, maybe not "never," but...) Cuomo for not running for president, though.
Wow! You were linked on Crooks & Liars -- you're, like, FAMOUS or somethin!
Great post!
Good stuff! I also liked his speech in '96, I think it was, but I think this one is better.
I think Dems need to speak like this more often. Liberalism is often both the practical, and moral, choice.
Thanks for posting that.
I loved Cuomo's speech (and Jackson's.) Those guys argued for the poor in the best tradition of the democratic party.
Sigh.
Second the motion on Chani. And on Cuomo's speech. Yes, we need to work like hell. And we sure could use some inspirational leadership that has the integrity to turn our nation around.
Cuomo should've run. He probably wouldn't have won--too smart, too Italian, too whatever for the white fundies who worshipped Reagan/Bush--but I would've voted for him.
Wonderful post, Fran.
Mario is a paisan from one of my old stomping grounds -- Richmond Hill, Queens. I remember that speech and I thought it was awesome then and oh, so relevant now.
Fran you are getting to be a pain in the arse. I come over here to read your lovely posts, and that is never enough. You have to always send me somewhere else! And I can't not go, since you have such exquisite taste, that I know I'm going to love where you send me. I don't have this much time! Geesh. End of rant.
Thanks for reminding us about this wonderful speech - and I also echo A Feather Adrift - I don't have time to read so many wonderful blogs! Stop me before I add another feed to my Reader! LOL!
I agree w/Quaker Dave, I always wished Cuomo had run for president. I don't know what stopped him...of course maybe he wanted to have a real life and not ruin it by being president. I'm sure you're never the same again.
