I Sucks At the Maths, I Do

I put this post up as it is really a funny video. And I suck at the "maths" as I have said many times at other blogs. This kid is a local and a big hit apparently. The lyrics are posted on the You Tube page. Enjoy. They do cry out to be read.

This post is especially dedicated to my 3 favorite math teachers, who - if they had been my teachers, might have changed things up for me, FranIam Professional Mathtard.

Who might those mathy people be???? Matty Boy, Mathman and the lovely and mathy Freida Bee.

These three make math into love for me.

With all respect due your friends, there doesn't exist such a person in the world for me!:) I completely suck at "numbermatics" as I call math. I sucked in high school, I sucked in college, I suck today at Math!! My wife has "the number brains" in our house.

And that kid should be a local legend for making that video. Wow!!!

Oh my. I am honoreed to be included in a post with Mathman, Matty Boy, and Drew. They are so mathematicious!

(This seals it for me; when I become a teacher next year (I'm still schooling,) I shall be sure to include dance moves in my curriculum, and cite this video for the proof of their relevance.)

When I was in Grade 6 it was obvious that the person who explained dividing by fractions to us was lying. Therefore, math made no sense, and I gave up trying to understand it. I was very good at memorizing formulae though, and recognizing when to apply THAT ONE, so I got good marks.

When I was 23, my best friend (who was almost finished his doctorate on full scholarship at Princeton, in Economics - Game Theory) said to me, "They didn't want to know what half of six is. They wanted to know how many halfs there are in six." It was clear as a full moon. I said, "You coulda showed me that ON MY RULER when we were 11!!!"

I always felt robbed of something I could have liked.

"Sang by"?
I was very good at math but after a certain point it no longer interested me. That's why God gave us electronic spreadsheets.

But I still make a pretty good proof reader and picker of nits.

Love the kid's creativity!

Fran -- the video's no longer available.

Paul- your point is duly noted! Late night and rushed posting for me!

Mathman - I bet that would be a cool kid to have in class.

FreidaBee Dance is going to be essential to your classroom, I can feel that!

TFWY - Numbermatics!!! I love it and I may just have to steal that from you, but I steal it with great love!!!

Kate Oh I so hear you, I got all turned around in math when I was a kid by many circumstances, included the so-called new math at the time. It just went from bad to worse; now I think I would like it if I could start over. Mattyboy writes great math posts that convince me of this.

AND- the video is back up!!

Cute stuff, Fran. Some of the comments here remind me of conversations I've had at parties with strangers.

"What do you do?"

"I teach math."

"Oh." (Long pause.) "I was good at math until..."

Nearly everybody has that last math class where things no longer worked for them.

Ack! I think that kid was in "The Omen!" And now he has satanic math skills!

"vector, vector, vector..."

I too am a mathtard, but I have a great appreciation for it now, and am very glad that my son is showing both aptitude for and great interest in math.

This was a good laugh!

I've always wanted to understand higher math and regreted not continuing with that in college. I stopped taking math after algebra II in high school--just because I didn't really like it.

Then at university logic counted as a math class and I minored in philosophy so I just never got back to it.

Of course I worked in banking for eight years. But that's just business math, accounting, auditing. It takes a certain anal retentiveness and technique, but for pure math skills it's about 5th grade level.

In fact, I believe with 5th grade math you could understand money and percentages, corner a market, and rule the world.

Still, I am fascinated by science--and since math is the language of science I feel a bit handicapped there in trying to understand things. Like I'm forever in need of a translator. Maybe I'll take math classes after I retire.

LOL!!! I'll have to e-mail that to my son...he's mathmeticious, too! The guy has been taking college level math courses since he's been a Freshman in high school (he's a senior now). So...you would think he would major in math in college, but NOOOOOO...he wants to major in Sociology. Go figure.

Nice. Very funny video which I'm going to share with lil' ones but one question though: what's math?

I should add that I am very grateful for those who are passionate about maths. In my youth I had friends who majored in it, but at some point they go beyond manipulation of numbers into nearly esoteric ponderings of organizing principles of the universe--voilĂ , the physicists who operate almost entirely in theory. Grateful for them all.

Now I'll go back to poetry and painting.

I was good at math until word problems. Sigh. I wish I had someone who could have sat me down and really taught me how to tackle them. That said, hope that kid is treated like a rock star at school.

oh, I'm with pissed in nyc... I could NEVER get word problems. It was like the parts of my brain did not connect, and I couldn't do the numbers with the "words" side.

I did great in geometry, though.

I hated math too, until I got to Business Stats in college and then I aced that.

When I worked for a PR firm, one of our clients was the PBS show NOVA, and for one episode we had to promote, there was this really stupid song about prime numbers. My co-workers and I got totally addicted to it.

"Prime is the number
That is only divisible by itself and 1.
They have no other factors.
Though they may have their detractors,
they are kind of fun."

Need more? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3302/02.html

Hee hee! Love that! Kid must have had a great time with that. Where was youtube when I was a kid?? We did a "movie" with still pictures when I was about 12. Was pretty good, actually.

I thought I was just stupid until I took some (very expensive) tests recently and found out that I have a bona-fide learning disability in math.

It explains so much.

I teach math to kindergartners. I always thought of myself as "not good at math" until I started to teach it and now I love it -- and I think they do too. I even teach the dreaded story problems. There is a whole pedagogy built around story problems (or "stories with a question," as one of my mentors calls them) some of it developed here in Wisconsin: Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI.) Listen to me -- I wax poetic about it. Thanks for the inspired video!

Fran,
This kid is great! As I was laughing my stomach started to cramp. Not cramping from laughter, cramping from remembering math classes. I was in advanced math in 5th grade but it was down hill from there. Didn't come back up til Mr. G. Remember him? My two 6th graders know not to come to me for help with their math homework.
