Tales that help me get it through my head that Democrats can't do diddly to reslice the economic pie.
The AMT: It's Not Just For The Rich Anymore
Have you ever paid the Alternative Minimum Tax? I have, and it sucks. Now admittedly the Frogette and I are doing OK, but the AMT was never meant for middle-income folk. It was meant for super-rich at a time when there were so many loopholes in the tax code (late 1960s, early 1970s) that they often got away with paying no tax. Now we have multiple proposals in Congress that deal with the AMT, and all but one are practically dead on arrival.
Charles Rangal (D NY) wants to repeal the AMT and offset the cost by placing a tax surcharge on families making over 200K/year . He also wants to sock it to the hedge-fund industry by taxing their lucrative pay packages as ordinary income rather than as capital gains, as it is now. (Did you know that the biggest income disparity in the US is the gap between corporate CEO's with their million dollar pay packages and hedge-fund managers with their billion dollar pay packages, all taxed at 15%. Sobering isn't it?) Predictably, Republicans are howling about "class warfare", but in an ironic twist top Democrats have been slow to endorse Rangal's proposal due to the huge campaign donations they've been getting from those very same hedge-fund f*ckos.
The only AMT proposal that has a chance is the Senate's, another extension of the relief package that has been in place for the majority of the decade. But here Republicans are threatening to hold up the bill unless Democrats agree to make all of the Bush tax cuts for the rich permanent. Considering the recent behavior of Senate Democrats, we'll probably see them cave and send this one to the House...where it will die.
Guess the only sure fire way way avoid the AMT is to do what the Frogette and I have done: Become a one income family.
Where's My Goddamned Fixed Rate?!
There was a reason President Decider "encouraged" but didn't mandate that the lending industry provide relief to families struggling to stay ahead of ballooning mortgage payments. By keeping government out of picture, he could 1) Avoid any blame for delays or inaction on getting relief to homeowners and 2) Keep Democrats from interfering to spread economic relief evenly and equitably. So, as it stands, lenders like Countrywide are putting in place programs to help some of their borrowers refinance, while others are simply letting their borrowers twist.
But the question I want answered--and I know I'm going to sound like whining pansy--is: How come those of us who were careful when we took out our mortgages don't get some kind of reward? I mean... I didn't put down a pittance. I didn't buy more house than I could afford (in fact I bought less than I wanted). Admittedly, I took out an ARM, but on a much longer term than typical residents of Babylon by the Bay. So in a way, I gave my lender a gift: Stability. Shouldn't I see some lending relief here? How about a nice fixed rate, thank you very much? Shall we take bets on the likelihood?

Kvatch speaks! And so wonderfully so.
Thanks for this post. Although the thoughts of all of this dampen my spirits. We are so screwed.
Thanks for your great insights and come back any time!!
Hi Kvatch!
I'm happy to see you back again.
If the Democrats give in and make those tax breaks for the rich permanent, I swear, I'll move to Canada.
I'll be happy if I can pay my rent next week. Right now things aren't looking so good.
Fran... Many thanks for the warm welcome.
Mary Ellen... Meaning to get back to you as well on your offer to blog at the Divine Democrat. I'll send you an email this afternoon.
Kimono Hime... Happy to make your acquaintance and sorry to here about your financial difficulties. Guess AMT is not something you worry about, huh? But still, it's just one piece of a huge economic tragedy. The widening income gap in this country is gonna lead to a lot of instability in the coming decades.
How come those of us who were careful when we took out our mortgages don't get some kind of reward?
You do, it's trickling down right now. Just give it some time, say, after the sun goes red giant.
Man, I fucking hate money manipulators. Quite possibly the most useless profession ever conjured up. I apologize profusely for my class envy.
Kimono Hime- I send such good thoughts. This is life as it is lived and the assrockets in DC and elsewhere ignore the plight of people. I am so sorry. Good luck. I hope people buy lots of things!
For those of you who do not yet know the lovely Kimono Hime- you should check out her blog. She has gorgeous things you may wish to buy.
Randal, I think you are onto something!
I am right there with you Kvatch, I could tell you of the horror story that I am facing with some property that I have. It's just crazy right now.
I've seen some rental property just fly up to the point that I cannot increase the rent because the property is government assistant and can only be at a certain amount.
I am now facing the problem of adding to the payment of the mortgage and the high cost of taxes on said property.
This is with about three houses that I have in this program and I think that it's not worth it anymore.
I am unable to increase rent because of the government hold that already reduced what could be the max. for said property and I cannot afford to keep the property and pay more extra because of the increase.
To set that off, I am looking at the taxes on all three at the end of the year and AMT. I am stuck in a no win problem with the government making money from me, while I am trying to provide homes for low income families that would not other wise be able to afford said type of homes.
These home is not slums and one home is one that I lived in until last year.
At your old site, I recall talking about the Apartment complex that I was preparing to buy as rental property. I'm very glad that I didn't follow through with that because I would be really feeling the tax fall out at the end of this year.
Grrrrrr. That's all I have to say. (Other than: the trickle is really a trickle up.)
...trickle is really a trickle up.
"Trickle up"? More like a gusher--A half a trillion dollar gusher!
Let's Talk, ugh. It's as if you're being punished for having the audacity to help someone out. Just tell them you're a Republican. I'm sure they'll suddenly find some loopholes.
